WIncreased protein in my diet to stay full and lose weight….am i going to bulk up?hat would you like to ask?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I recently got a bit off track from my previously successful diet and exercise regimen, and I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t eating enough protein to give me energy to exercise, and the lack of protein was making me starved so i would binge eat. I made some changes, and now my day’s meals look like this:

Breakfast:

1 cup of nonfat cottage cheese
1 apple
2 cups of coffee with light cream (2-3 tbsp)

In between: 1 zero calorie sobe lifewater; 1 regular bottled water; and one adirondack zero calorie flavored water

Lunch:

****Varies*****

I alternate every day between:

1 (130 calorie) rice wrap with mustard, 2 slices of cracked pepper turkey, and lettuce
1 apple
1 fiberone (50 calorie) yogurt

OR

1 EAS AdvantEdge protein shake (110 calories) and an apple

In between: lots and lots of water; celery and salsa; occasionally coffee; occassionally some egg beaters (but not often, maybe once every two weeks)

Dinner:

5-6 ounces of skinless, boneless (fatless) chicken
a huge plate of green vegetables
salad with just veggies and 2 tbsp of Lite Sweet Vidalia dressing
3/4 cup of white rice

After:

25 calories freeze pop
10 calorie gluten free ice cream cone
60 calorie jello pudding

This seems to be working out nicely for me in regards to satisfying me and controlling my hunger…. however, the other day my mom bought be "pure whey protein" with 23 g of protein in 1 scoop and only 120 calories….but before I use it, i want to make sure that it won’t make me gain MORE weight by bulking me up….im a girl, btw, and I just want to lose 5-10 more pounds and have lean muscle rather than flabiness.

so Is my diet okay like it is? should I not add in the whey protein? and if i should, where do you recommend i fit it in? how often?

thanks!

Whey will not make you bulk up:) Focus on your nutrition, it looks good! Stay positive, you can always add whey as a meal replacement in your diet as well!

Dennis’ chicken dinner

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Dennis is one of my Purple Pincher (Coenobita clypeatus) land hermits. I have Purple Pinchers and Ecuadorians (Coenobita compressus). He’s named Dennis because I got him when hurricane Dennis was all over the news. He was a little guy then, but he’s now about the size of a golf ball. Last night, I gave the crabs a wishbone with some roast chicken left on it; the bulk of their diet is fruit and vegetables with some grains (air-popped popcorn is a favourite treat), but they need some meat and fish, too, and it’s fun to watch them eat so daintily no matter what the food. All land hermits have one pincer larger than the other; the large pincer is used for defense and blocking the opening of the shell, and the small one is used for eating. To drink, they hold their pincers together and rub them back and forth to wick water up between them. Anyway, hermies are cute, and Dennis is no exception. :)

Women can’t bulk up without steroids. We simply don’t have enough testosterone. So no, you won’t bulk up from that. You’ll just be nicely toned. :)

Whey protein should be used immediately following a workout as that is when your muscles need a fast digesting protein and whey is perfect for that.

Skip the EAS shakes. They have soy protein which is not healthy. Have more cottage cheese – much better for you.

Tips to gain muscle mass as a vegan?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I’m a 5′7, 115lb male looking to bulk up a little. I do some light weight training, generally lighter weight incline benches, flies, and curls. I eat about 1,200 calories a day, generally fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. I take 23g of soy protein a day, but I’m not sure if I should be taking more or not. Any suggestions?

It is possible to gain muscle mass as a vegan. Look at Robert Cheeke, a vegan bodybuilder. You need to eat 2200 calories to gain muscle weight. 1200 calories is a joke.

You need 120 grams of protein a day to build muscle. So eat more beans, tofu, almond milk, etc.

You need to lift heavier and heavier weight to force your muscles to get bigger. Light weight wont cut it. Muscles adapt quickly and need more challenge

Am i eating the correct food to tone or bulk ?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Hi, During the week i work permanent night shifts. When i wake up in the afternoon i have a bowl of bran flakes ,then i eat the evening meal with the family around 6pm, usually chicken or red meat with plenty of vegetables. I then cycle 4 miles to work at a fast pace, 30 Min’s after i have a tin of tuna. Around midnight i have a jacket potato with beans.Around 3am i have a tub of cottage cheese and then 30 Min’s before i cycle home i have an orange and a banana. Before i go to sleep i have a boiled egg (without the yolk).
3 times a week i lift weights and my work is pretty strenuous, but i don’t seem to be toning or bulking, just staying the same.
Am i eating the wrong foods or the wrong foods at certain times etc.

Thanks in advance…

I don’t know how your metabolism works but you could build more muscle by..
Incorporating more protein. Kick that tub of cottage cheese and replace it with a lean source of meat, like chicken breast (boneless, skinless). 4oz can have 23g of protein. Depending on your body weight, you should have 1g of protein per pound of lean mass. For example, I’m 130lbs with 20% body fat, which means I’m 104 pounds of lean mass. I should have 104g of protein a day.

Idk how many calories you’re getting a day but in order to gain muscle, you need to eat ABOVE your maintenence calories. So if you eat 2000 a day and you neither gain or loose weight, try increasing the number (with lean protein sources and veggies, of course!) and see if you get any results. Slowly increase the calorie amount, tho. If you know you already have a fast metabolism, add 500 calories to your diet and see if you gain 1lb a week of LEAN MASS.
It’s hard to build big muscles eating in a deficit.

There’s a ton of lean protein shakes you can get. Try not to get the ones that are carb loaded. Instead, aim for the ones that are 100-150 cals per serving and provide 20~40g of protein.

It also depends on your lifting.
Are you lifting low reps with heavy weights? Low reps is 6-8. If you’re lifting heavy enough, after you do your 6-8 reps you should be able to do one more rep but thats all. You don’t want to lift until total exhaustion.
It also depends if you’re lifting with free weights or machines. Free weights is generally better than machines unless you want to be a body builder (ew). Things like the manual shoulder press or squat do a lot more for your body than a leg press machine or an overhead press machine. They force you to work in 2d space and therefore use less muscles than a free weight.
