St Vincent Vignettes – Island Harvest Time: Fish & Fruit, Nuts & Berries

All this recent talk about obtaining our food locally? We are merely returning to our “roots”! Like Native American cultures before us, the Outdoor GeekGal carries out a Fall foraging tradition on St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge. Nuts, Fruits, and berries, in addition to cassina, shellfish, and game, were the island food treasures that prompted Fall seasonal visits for centuries. Watch as she puckers up to an amazingly sweet wild persimmon! Nowadays, the Refuge also hosts a huge variety of Fall migrating birds and waterfowl, and of course, our renowned game animals are also fattening up on this bounty in anticipation of winter dormancy.
